This medical illustration series depicts the normal anatomy of the fetus in utero contrasted with fetal distress caused by partial placental abruption, a tearing away of the placenta from the wall of the uterus, resulting in hemorrhage. Because the placental tissue does not contact the uterine wall fully, the baby does not receive adequate oxygen and displays symptoms of distress, such as an an abnormal heart rate.
