This medical illustration diagram clearly pictures a femoral nerve injury resulting from the patient sitting for a prolonged period of time in the dorsal lithotomy position. During some forms of obstetric (OB/GYN) surgery, labor and delivery, or other procedures, women may sit for a long time in the "stirrup" position. The nerves of the hip and pelvis may suffer from stretching and compression if the patient is kept in the position for too long.
